About Mr Jafri

Mr Jafri is a Consultant in Lower Limb (Hip & Knee) Replacement and Trauma with a specialist interest in revision surgery. He has a keen interest in Sports injury and Keyhole surgery to the knee. He has over 10 years of Consultant experience with 1500 knee and hip replacements performed.

He is appointed as a Consultant Lower Limb and Trauma Surgeon at the University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer University of Newcastle. His areas of interest include the management and revision of metal on metal hips and peri-prosthetic fractures.

Mr Jafri is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon specialising in the management of painful knee and hip conditions.

He is locally trained surgeon after attending Newcastle University Medical School, then completing basic and higher surgical training in the North East of England before competing the prestigious Arthroplasty and trauma fellowship for a year in Auckland, New Zealand.

Mr Jafri was appointed in 2011 as an NHS Consultant at the University Hospitals of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation trust. He also holds an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer post for the University of Newcastle. He performs his private consultations and surgery at the Tees Nuffield Hospital in Stockton.

Mr Jafri is specialist knee and hip surgeon and has particular expertise in joint replacement surgery, sports injuries and arthroscopic knee surgery, revision surgery and trauma. He performs around 300 joint replacements a year.

Mr Jafri led the ‘Patient Joint replacement Enhanced recovery programme’ for his NHS trust which was recognised nationally for its improved patient satisfaction and decreased length of hospital stay. He won the British Orthopaedic Association Clinical Leadership Award in 2017 for this work.

Mr Jafri’s contribution towards post- graduate education has been recognised by the Durham and Tees Valley Practice Training Programme in 2021 when he was awarded Regional Hospital Trainer of the Year.

Mr Jafri is a firm advocate of shared decision making - ensuring patients preferences, circumstances , goals, values and beliefs are considered along with the clinicians expertise of treatment options, best evidence, risks and benefits. This collaborative approach ensures that patients are treated to make decisions which are right for them.

He works closely with dedicated Musculo-skeletal radiologists who provide MRI scans and expert reports usually within 1 week. He also works in close conjunction with an exceptional Physiotherapy team who provide tailored treatment programmes.
